DLCO (Diffusing Capacity of the Lungs for Carbon Monoxide) is a specialized lung function test that measures how effectively oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged in the lungs. By assessing the lung’s ability to transfer gas from inhaled air to the bloodstream, DLCO testing helps diagnose various pulmonary conditions, including pulmonary fibrosis, emphysema, and other interstitial lung diseases.
During the DLCO test, patients inhale a small amount of carbon monoxide and hold their breath for a brief period. The amount of carbon monoxide that diffuses into the bloodstream is then measured, providing insights into lung health. Low DLCO values may indicate compromised lung function, necessitating further evaluation and treatment.
